The Proactive Servant Leader

For Servant Leaders to get to the next level, they need to be more strategic.

Here is how they can...

Learn about strategic thinking

This is a change in mindset, consider the following to start becoming a strategic thinker.
  • Seek input from others throughout the organisation.
  • Have a long-term focus. Find creative ways to say "yes" when leaders come to you for help.
  • Be hands-off.  If you're a micro-manager, you're tactical, not strategic. You need to guide your team to make decisions and let them learn from their mistakes.
  • Be willing to take risks. Carve out time to think about the future with your team. Recognise and encourage risk-taking.
  • Prioritise your time. Don't equate being busy with being effective.
  • Be nimble.  Be a person who leads change and helps others overcome their fear of change.
  • Be a life-long learnerSeek out knowledge and new skills. Be open to learning from others as well as teaching others.
  • Be creative. Creativity isn't just coming up with big ideas, but also being innovative in daily activities and long-term thinking.

Do your homework

  • Learn about your company and your industry.
  • Your work is connected to a wider machine — so use it to network.
  • Is there FAQs that need to be provided?
  • Put your hand up for opportunities to learn by doing.
  • Look at brain storming sessions whenever there is an opportunity to do so.

Be proactive

  • Find out all on the latest tips, tricks and techniques.
  • Look at ways where your team can add value, simply by asking "how can I help?'

Reframe your mindset

  • Think what could be as opposed to what is.
  • Focus on being strategic and forward thinking.
